Wearing the right gear is crucial to staying safe - it will give you the best chance of minimising injury if you're involved in a crash or come off. Here's a quick guide to the most important items.

Crash helmet

The most crucial bit of gear is obviously a helmet - a good dealer will give you advice and make sure your helmet fits properly.

The most important thing about your helmet is the fit. It should be a good snug fit - you may think it's too tight, especially around your cheeks. Also, consider a brightly coloured helmet - it can help other road users see you.

Don't buy a second hand helmet. You won't know what's happened to it in its previous life. A helmet has a life of about 2-3 years - and if dropped from a height of more than about two feet is likely to be unsafe.

Gloves

Gloves are next on the list. It's vitally important that you keep you hands well protected at all times -even when it's hot. If you come off your bike, your hands may well be one of the first things to hit the ground.

Jackets and trousers

Protective (and waterproof) jackets and trousers are another essential bit of kit. Never venture out for a ride in just a t-shirt and shorts. If you invest in a quality jacket it will last for years - and protect you in the event of a crash.
