If you're buying a used motorbike or scooter in a private sale, ensure the details tally on all documents including the V5, MOT and service history. You need to be sure you're buying from the registered owner.
Check the registered address - and make sure that's where you're buying it from.
It may also be worth checking that the frame number (if you can locate it) is the same as the one on the V5 or MOT certificate.
Check the bike over thoroughly, and if you can take a mechanically minded friend with you. You can also get a mechanical inspection from the AA or similar organisation - but it's likely to cost in the region of £200. Also, if possible, take it for a test ride - as long as you are insured.
If you're buying new, do your homework and find a respected dealer in your area.
